1. The AI Wars are coming to Super Bowl LX on Sunday, as Anthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot, is taking aim at OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The series of four viral Anthropic Super Bowl commercials comically portrays how things might be when ChatGPT makes good on its promise to add advertisements to certain tiers of the AI chatbot. The ads employ the same anthropomorphization of tech commercials as Apple once did versus Microsoft by turning ChatGPT into various robotic humans who at first seem helpful, but then attempt to slip in inappropriate commercials into conversations. You can check out the entire series here, here, and here.
Counterstrike: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was in no laughing mood after seeing that the ads were winning fans on social media. In response, he posted an overly long essay on X.com, pushing back against the “ad takeover” characterization. Calling Anthropic an “authoritarian company” that “serves an expensive product to rich people,” he wrote, “I guess it’s on brand for Anthropic doublespeak to use a deceptive ad to critique theoretical deceptive ads that aren’t real, but a Super Bowl ad is not where I would expect it.” However, commenters underneath the post, which drew 9.5 million views, were quick to rather gleefully point out what they believe are glaring contradictions and hypocrisies in Altman’s response.

2. It was only a matter of time, but it has finally happened: The Super Bowl is getting its first commercial entirely generated by AI. The company behind the ad is Svedka vodka, and the commercial shows two robots in a nightclub drinking the vodka as humans party around them. So far, the ad has 97k views on YouTube, but reactions are mixed, with 67 Likes and 276 Dislikes.
Behind the AI: Svedka and its parent company, Kentucky-based Sazerac, hired San Francisco firm Silverside AI to create the ad, which is called “Shake Your Bots Off.” Silverside AI is also the studio behind AI-generated commercials for Coca-Cola, Amazon, Slack, and Manscaped.
